The Annual Rhubarb Festival is celebrated in Shedden at the beginning of June, and, as the Festival organizers point out,
... "like your rhubarb patch - every year it gets a little bigger".
Shedden is near St. Thomas, Ontario. From my home it is approximately a 1 1/2 hour drive through South-Western Ontario (Canada).
Our daughter and son-in-law (and our grandson), are in the process of building a new home a "stone throw" from Shedden, so we decided to combine a visit to them, and an enjoyable afternoon at the Rosy Rhubarb Festival.
One of our sons, and our daughter-in-law, along with their two children accompanied us, and we had a fun day!
Since our vehicle has a very hard time driving past a "garage sale" or a "yard sale" without stopping, we, of course included some early morning garage/yard sale shopping on our way into Shedden.
There were great bargains for one and all!
We met up with my daughter and her family at the Keystone Grounds, and, with kids in tow, we visited the many craft and other interesting stands of the vendors on site.
We checked out the Longest Rhubarb Stalk Contest and Largest Rhubarb Leaf Contest entries too!
We listened to the Tomato Soup Band play while we enjoyed a scrumptious lunch chosen from the many available food vendors.
It was a joy to see everyone, young and old, enjoy the day celebrating the "pie plant"!
There were pony rides and a mini midway, complete with old fashion cotton candy, and much more!
The day would not be complete without watching the "Birds of Prey Demonstrationand meeting the "Snake Lady" and her collection of reptiles to see (and touch!) up-close!
All throughout the day rides around town were offered in the "People Haulers" to and from the parking lots on Saturday and Sunday.
Potted rhubarb roots were available for purchase, encouraging those who have still not started a rhubarb patch to begin growing this amazingly easy to grow vegetable.
The most versatile vegetable too!
Of course there were rhubarb pies, rhubarb squares, and other delicious looking baked goods with rhubarb available for purchase.
There was a constant line-up at the stand for a rhubarb sundae...after all the program for the Festival claims: "It's our Rhubarb Sauce that made us Famous".
The next day there was a scheduled Antique and Custom Car Show, a Beef BBQ, and an Interdenominational Church Service at the Keystone Complex in Shedden.
Unfortunately we were not able to attend the Opening Ceremonies on the Friday before our visit.
In addition to the Opening Ceremonies, the program indicated there was a popular Auction and Entertainment provided by the Rosy Rhubarb Talent Show!
If entering a Baking Contest is something you like to do, the Rosy Rhubarb Festival hosts a Baking Contest for double crust pies, muffins, and desserts. Rhubarb entries only of course!
And especially for the kids - a Poster Contest (to promote the baking contest:)
Camping arrangements (non-serviced sites) were also available all weekend long on the Keystone Grounds.
I was really amazed at the large crowd of people that this Festival attracted!
If you have the opportunity to visit this yearly event, take the kids or grandkids (or both), and enjoy a day in the town of Shedden!
And, of course we couldn't leave without purchasing a delectable, fresh baked rhubarb pie! Yummy!
Congratulations to Rosy Rhubarb Festival organizers - a job well done!
